The Town House, Main Street, Newmilns.

  • The Town House.
  • The Prison.
  • The Prison ,ceiling hook included.

The Town House is situated at 48-50 Main Street, Newmilns and is now home to the Irvine Valley Regeneration Partnership who can be contacted on 01560 322966 or Email: ivrp@east-ayrshire.gov.uk

The Town House was built in 1739 by the 4th Earl of Loudoun to house the Burgh Council. It has a belfry (the bell is inscribed 1547) a tower and a double outside stair the landing of which was used to address open air meetings and to make declarations. The Council comprised of a Chancellor, two Baillies, a Treasurer, a Fiscal and 13 Councillors. The Council met in the upper Chamber under somewhat cramped conditions. On the ground floor is a prison with a vaulted ceiling complete with a hook! For those unfortunate enough to fall foul of the Fiscal, it is reputedly haunted so be warned!

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
