Robert Burns at Newmilns
A lesser known fact about Burns and his association with Newmilns is his connection with local Freemasonry. He requested to join Lodge Loudoun Kilwinning Newmilns No51, he chose to join this Lodge.
At this time the Lodge met above the Loudoun Arms, Gavin Hamilton, factor at Loudoun, was Master of the Lodge, he is mentioned in "Holy Willies Prayer". John Lapraik, fellow poet from the Muirkirk area also attended, he was a great friend of Burns. I understand that a John Arnott of Dalquatswood? Was possibly a member, this building is now a ruin. Burns would have spent many a convivial evening amongst the brethern, I understand they encouraged the printing of the 2nd Edition as did the Reverend Lawrie of the local clergy. I am confident there is more information out there and someone more qualified than myself to bring it forward.
