BASFORD AT BOTTOM OF CUT AND UNION STREET OR WILSONS ON UNIONSTREET IAN SLOAN
Is it the old School?
Zillah Warner nee Girvan
Well done Ian, it is indeed Basfords at the bottom of the 'Cut', any idea of the
year? Thanks to all who contributed.
PS. The photograph was taken from the rear of my house at the top of High Street.
The original factory was Henderson Morton and Ingles, the lace machines were stripped and packaged and exported to a new venture in India by Mr Lawrence Mitchell of Johnston Shields in the late sixties.
My late boss Andrew Murray was sent to "erect" the looms (6off) but the factory never lasted for to many years as the local labour did not have the skills to maintain the machines and soon they fell into disrepair.
One of the looms was dismantled and sent back to Newmilns circa 1976/77 and another local lad Robert McKell and i had the unenviable task of opening the crates, and to our horror we discovered what we thought was a large coloured snake in one of the wooden boxes, it turned out to be a portion of a thick rope!!!!! What a laugh we had!!!
Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
