Newmilns: Where and what is it?

by Stephen Drury

Where and what is this? I understand it to be a Craft Guild Coat of Arms, the three castles are commonly used on this type of heraldry. Does anyone have more information? Let me know and I will share my theory.

This is above Todds, 52 Main Street Newmilns.
I think it was to do with the trades house.

Stephen Drury says

Thanks Ian, correct location, I understand it was a craftsmens college for apprenticeships, possibly sponsored by local trade guilds, the coat of arms is, I am sure, a craft guild insignia, and early type of trade union, anyone got any more details? What is now in this accommodation?

Alex Christie says

Speaking with a local man. He could offer that the coat of arms was originally on another building in Newmilns, which when demolished the stone carving was rescued and installed in the current building. The three castles could represent Loudoun, Cessnock and Barr of Loudoun Estate.
I will ask the chronicler Craufuird Campbell Loudoun if he can help.

Stephen Drury says

Thanks Alex, most interesting and your comments are worthy of further research, I have previously considered the former use of this building but have no response from s1 readers, perhaps the coat of arms is older than the building to which it is attached or perhaps it is not relevant to the premises. Your theory about the three castles is worthy, could this Guild have a connection to local Gentry labour? I hope your research bears further fruit and we could possibly find a positive answer. Many thanks for your contribution. Stephen Drury.

The crest is the Arms of the Incorporated Masons and was part of the orginal building.
