Newmilns Tower, Castle Street, Newmilns
Newmilns Tower, Newmilns Castle, or The Keep is situated in Castle Street, once referred to as The Ducat.
Tower was probably built around 1533 and 1537, it has been recently renovated by Strathclyde BuildingPreservation Trust. The word "Ducat" originated from the Gaelic "Dhu Chat", dark wood, it formed the name Blackwood a personal and place name associated with the area. The tower house was built for Hugh Campbell of Loudoun, it has three storeys under the parapet and a garret storey above, all floors are accessed from a single wheeled stairway, the corbelling of the parapet is continuous with bartizan corners. There is an empty panel above the doorway, but without a coat of arms or a device. It has had many uses, prison, grain store and has Covenanting connections being a garrison house during The Killing Times, it is now habitable and available for renting.
