Stephen Drury says:

The memorial to slain Covenanter John Law is situated in Castle Street, Newmilns not its original site as it was previously situated on the west side of Newmilns Keep. John Law was attempting to rescue eight fellow Covenanters who were captured at a prayer meeting by Captain Inglis and his troops who were garrisoned in Newmilns. John Law was shot on April 1685, there is some suggestion that he was shot whilst attempting to escape from Newmilns Keep which was used as a prison.

I am unable to substantiate this, John Law was steeped in the Covenanting tradition, his sister Margaret Law was married to John Nisbet of Hardhill whose memorial stone is also in Newmilns, he was executed for his beliefs and Margaret and her young family were evicted, she died on the moors near Stonehouse.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
