Former Clydesdale Bank, Main St, Newmilns
The site once occupied The Clydesdale Bank and was formerly the Black Bull Hotel, the Newmilns Anti-Slavery Society who supported Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War met here, Newmilns weaving was to suffer the effects of the Federal blockade of cotton from the Confederate States. Lincoln sent an American Flag in thanks for the town's support. It took pride of place and was paraded on auspicious occasions; it was, however later mislaid. During the Civic Week of 1949 a replacement was sent to the town on behalf of the American Ambassador, this is exhibited in Loudoun Parish Church.
