Lady Flora's Institute, Newmilns
This fine building was built in 1875-1877 originally a school for girls but was later used a public hall. The design was by F.T. Pilkington, it was unfortunately dilapidated by the year 1981 and fell into disuse. Today it has been restored to its former glory and is a Sheltered Housing Unit.
Lady Flora Hastings was born in 1806 and was the daughter of the 1st Marquis of Hastings and Lady Flora Mure Campbell the Countess of Loudoun. Lady Flora was appointed to the household of The Duchess of Kent Queen Victoria's Mother where she was Lady of the Bedchamber, however scandal rocked the Royal Household and rumours spread of Lady Flora's pregnancy. She died in Buckingham Palace in 1839 and was laid to rest in Loudoun Kirk, it transpired she had liver disease and swelling of the stomach.
Her poems were published and raised £700, her sister the Marchioness of Bute donated £12,000 and The Institute was built in her memory. Today the buildings function is as a sheltered housing unit and the memory of Lady Flora lives on.
Lady Flora's is managed by Trust Housing Association, the Local Co-ordinator is Edith M. Shedden.
