Newmilns is a former textile village seven miles east of Kilmarnock in the Irvine Valley, East Ayrshire, between Galston and Darvel. Established in 1490 by Campbell of Loudon, 16th century refugees from France and Flanders brought lace-making skills to Newmilns, which was also a centre for Covenanters. In the 19th century Newmilns was given a US flag as thanks for its written support of the Union cause during the American Civil War. Landmarks include Newmilns Tower, the Town House, Morton Hall, Lady Flora's Institute and the Snow and Sports Complex north of the village. Newmilns Youth Forum (NYF) has started its activities again every Wednesday night from 7pm to 8.30pm at the Masonic Hall. Children aged five to 14 can play at computer games, snooker, table tennis, air hockey, football, arts and crafts and much more. The club will also be holding a children's Valentine's disco on Saturday, February 13. (continued)
